If
you have been denied credit, employment, or insurance in the past
sixty days based on the information in a credit report, you are
automatically entitled to a copy of your report from the agency that
issued it for free. It's the law in all states that when you are
denied any opportunity based on your credit, you must be notified by
the agency that turned you down and given the information you need to
obtain your free report. In some situations, a free report will
be issued
if you are a welfare recipient, unemployed but planning to seek
employment in the next ninety days, or you believe you are a victim of
fraud. It normally takes between five to ten days to receive your
report by mail.
(Please visit
the "Choosing Credit Cards" page for several companies
that will accept or deny you instantly credit based on your credit
history. If they deny you, you may get a free report simply by calling
a 1-800 number).
If you have not been denied credit the
past 60 days, and you still wish to pay the credit bureau for a copy
of your credit report, you can do so by contacting each credit bureau
directly. The customary charge for one report is about $8 - $9 per
bureau.
